Troian Bellisario struggled with an eating disorder and cutting in high school, the 28-year-old Pretty Little Liars actress reveals in the February issue of Seventeen, making her the second cast member of the show to talk publicly about self-destructive behavior.
Bellisario confirmed: “I started self-harming when I was a junior. I would withhold food or withhold going out with my friends, based on how well I did that day in school.”
She tells Seventeen that she underwent professional treatment for her disorder, but indicates that appearing on Pretty Little Liars makes recovery more challenging. “Honestly, it’s an ongoing struggle. Especially on a show that has the word pretty in it! Sometimes I feel like I’m trying too hard, like I don’t belong. I just look around at Lucy [Hale], Shay [Mitchell], and Ashley [Benson], and I’m just like, Why am I on this show? Sometimes I’ve felt like a fraud.”
Bellisario did speak out against the show last month, criticizing a promotional image that appeared heavily Photoshopped. “But aren’t we attractive enough?” she tweeted.
