“Modern Family” star Sarah Hyland recently obtained a temporary restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, Matthew Prokop, after allegations that he physically and verbally abused her during their five-year relationship. The order currently requires Prokop to stay at least 100 yards away from Hyland and her dog; Hyland will be back in court on October 10 for a hearing on whether to extend the order.
According to documents obtained by TMZ, Hyland, 23, claimed in her court filing that Prokop “relentlessly bombarded me with vile, threatening and emotionally disturbing texts and voice mails including his own suicide threats” following her breakup with the actor who once appeared on “Family.”
In one of the most disturbing incidents, Hyland alleges in May during an argument Prokop pinned her against a car and verbally abused her while choking her so hard it injured her voice. “His grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak,” she said in the court papers. “I was scared and in fear for my life.” The domestic violence TRO also covered Hyland’s dog because the document claims that Prokop also threatened that the actress would never see her pet again.
When Hyland decided to end the relationship, she called her “Modern Family” mother, actress Julie Bowen, to be present during the breakup. According to the documents, Prokop became upset when he saw Bowen and others, at which point Bowen counseled Hyland to leave the house because she thought the younger star was not safe around Prokop, who allegedly “ran outside into the backyard and began screaming” after throwing a lighter at Hyland.
The court documents also allege that Prokop threatened to set one of Hyland’s homes on fire before entering a rehabilitation facility in August. When he was released on September 21, she claims the director of the facility contacted her and suggested she should get the restraining order.
